The first thing you must do is establish trust with your SSM's children. You can not demand trust and respect because these have to be established with time. In order for a child to trust you, you first of all must be sincere and you must be available for him/her to approach you. Here's a tip when having an outing: Plan acitivties that don't require a lot of talking. Instead, "DO" fun things together to break the ice, like bike riding, roller blading, bowling, etc. Laughing together is a natural bonding.
